In a 1975 study researchers concluded that fibromyalgia Arctic Blast patients have abnormal alpha wave activity that disrupts their stage IV sleep. Other studies have since derived at similar conclusions, specifically, that sleep quality was significantly predictive of pain, fatigue, and social functioning. Neurofeedback can train the individual's brain to access better sleep wake cycles which leads to the pain greatly dissipating or going away altogether. Chronic pain sufferers who also have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder - For a person with PTSD, at some point in his or her life something scary happened and their world has never been the same. They perpetually perceive the world as dangerous. If something should happen to them physically (e.g. back strain) many times their bodies seem to hold on to the physical trauma in the same way that their brain holds on to emotional trauma. Typically alpha-theta protocol comes up at some point for this individual, and it will free their mind from being stuck in the trauma and the persistent fearful state goes away. Following the relief from the PTSD, many times their body starts to let go of the trauma it has been physically holding on to as well.
