However, if you haven't eaten recently, as is the case first thing in the morning, the body needs an alternative source of fuel, and so it will take from your fat stores. Fat after-burn. Not only does early morning exercise burn more fat, but the fat burning continues after the workout is over. How does this work? Basically, exercising raises your metabolism and keeps it raised for a good few hours after you stop. If you exercise at night though, you lose a lot of this benefit because your body goes into a sedentary state during sleep. Exercising in the morning allows your body to take full advantage of the fat after-burn effect.
